About Permit to Work
Permit to Work manages the risk of particularly hazardous work and work environments by defining what work is to be done, when, where, and by whom. The risk level introduced by all hazards must be evaluated, and safety precautions to mitigate the risk of accident or injury must be defined.
Permit to Work Process
The permit-to-work process begins when, after the scope of work is determined, an Applicant (the person who will perform the hazardous work) completes and submits a permit-to-work certificate to the organization’s issuing authority. The document is reviewed by the Health and Safety Manager, who considers all possible risks and hazards as part of a robust risk evaluation process, and either authorizes or rejects the permit. Next, the Health and Safety Manager issues a permit to work describing the work, all potential hazards associated with the work, and any protective measures or equipment to be used.
For example, a Health and Safety Manager would issue a permit to work for any hot work such as welding or metal drilling. During this process, all potential hazards and their risk levels are evaluated, and appropriate safety measures to mitigate these risks, such as face shielding and keeping all personnel except for the approved workers away from the worksite, are documented in the permit to work.
The permit to work must be suspended if the circumstances surrounding the work change or if an uncontrolled hazard is discovered or introduced. When the work is completed, the permit is closed.
